Summary

Will assist and be under the guidance of the Court Clerk to carry out clerical tasks in Tribal Court of Law.

Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ability to travel to court clerk trainings to receive certifications and to attend tribal court conferences.
  • Complete various online trainings
  • Performs various clerical and administrative duties, but with specialized attention to the fact that the information, decisions, and communication involved are sensitive and/or confidential.
  • Follows directive of Tribe’s Constitution, Code of Laws, Judge, Prosecutor, Court Administrator and Court Clerk
  • Assists Court Clerk to prepare courtroom for hearings, chairs, tables, FTR recording system, robe, etc.
  • Assists Court Clerk in preparing docket of cases to be heard. Record minutes of court proceedings via FTR recording, by hand, and at the discretion of the judge cause to be transcribed, testimony and hearings.
  • Assists with case files, legal documents submitted to Court, checks for adherence to law or court procedures, prepares case folders, and posts, file, and routes documents.
  • Assists Court Clerk to record case disposition, court orders, payment of court fines and fees into Full Court, hardcopy into files, and maintenance of case files.
  • Assists with receiving payments of court fees/fines and records amounts collected, logs into Full Court, and hand-delivers payments to accounting daily.
  • Maintains a cooperative interaction with other departments: Accounting, Social Services, ICW, Police, Wellness Center Counseling, and Housing Departments.
  • Other duties as assigned and as necessary.

 

Supervisory Requirements

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

Local Tribal cultural knowledge preferred. Must have respect for Tribal culture. Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information. Must demonstrate office etiquette and be respectful to others. Experience and Eduction

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; Basic office experience and strong computer skills required; Ability to complete all trainings and certifications.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read, comprehend and interpret instructions, laws, procedures accurately; short and lengthy correspondence, and reports.  Ability to write correspondence, reports and other papers accurately and concisely.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to clients, Tribal and non-Tribal members, and people of all races and nationalities, and employees of the Tribe, and other agencies.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Basic mathematical skills; addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals and fractions.  Ability to use a calculator.

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
